Research publications and contemporary research communication. Eleonora Dagienė (VGTU, LMPA) [PDF]
Research publications have always been considered as the main part of research communication. The presentation is going to give an insight on how time and modern technologies have transformed its value and what position it takes in the life of the contemporary academic society. Taking a researcher‘s publication as a measurement unit, traditional and alternative methods such as networks and maps which are related to evaluation of researchers and institutions will be overviewed.

Ethics and declaration of publication copyright. Prof. Raimundas Kirvaitis (LMPA) [PDF]
A number of researchers face difficulties in listing article authors. The problem is what sequence authors should be presented in. Should they be listed in accordance with the scientific title they hold, research or publication input or perhaps other principles ought to be followed? The presentation is going to review the practice applied abroad and ways to solve this problem.

University rating systems. Dr. Gintarė Tautkevičienė (KTU) [PDF]
University ratings have recently received much attention both from an academic society and other interest groups such as students, their parents, representatives of industrial and business enterprises. Future students and their parents seek to choose the most suitable institution to study in; institutions employing graduates want to know the level of readiness to work of their future employees. Ratings are carried out at the national, regional and global levels. There are many rating systems in the world which use different criteria and their measurement methods. University ratings are made based on different quantitative and qualitative indicators. Some rating methodologies use similar criteria, others differ in merits. Some institutions measuring ratings receive the data from evaluating institutions; others conduct surveys on institutions or use internet data. Even though different rating systems are criticised for failing to be entirely objective or clearly defined, the results of different interested groups are used as one of the most important criteria in taking both personal and institutional decisions. Comparing the objectiveness of indicators, this speech will present the most popular rating measurement methodologies in the world.

Research journal evaluation and Thomson Reuters indicators. Audrė Trumpienė, Eglė Šegždienė (The Wroblewski Library of the Academy of Sciences) [PDF]
In Lithuania, a journal is nowadays evaluated on the basis of bibliometric evaluation of research publications for the sciences of physics, biomedicine and technologies. Methods which are complex and require routine work and access to Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports (TR JCR) are necessary for a measurement to be calculated. The presentation reviews TR JCR journal ratings and indices for specific subject areas in accordance with the analysis of report data of 2010 of the Nature Research Centre, Centre for Physical Sciences and Technology, Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy of Vilnius University and Lithuanian Energy Institute.

Scientometric discourse in social and humanitarian sciences. Dr. Rita Vaičekauskaitė (Klaipeda University) [PDF]
A famous phrase by Kandinski “a uniform should not be made out of a form” shows that meticulous and uncritical application of a method leads to formalism. For this reason expression of scientometric criteria such as citation in social and humanitarian sciences deserves a subtle and reflexive attention. Discursive perspective draws attention to the fact that practices having clear form go along with special social practices, characters creating, transferring and interpreting it as well as the context.

How can Elsevier SciVal solutions support Lithuanian researchers and research management? Piotr Golkiewicz (Elsevier) [PDF]
In today’s demanding times, management of research institutions becomes increasingly complex. Decision makers need objective and up-to-date factual information to efficiently and effectively organize their research organizations. This information is required to evaluate strengths and competencies of research institution in order to setup its research strategy. It is also necessary to assess if research centers are structured in the most optimal way and whether the right people are in the right place. University leaders may benefit greatly by identification of authors fostering inter(national) collaboration, which in majority of cases leads to more successful research projects and increased funding. Based on Scopus data Elsevier has developed new generation of tools aiming at supporting resolution of these challenges. These tools, collected within the SciVal suite of products deliver comprehensive and integrated workflow solutions to help you evaluate, establish and execute your research strategies and performance assessments.
